What Are Self-Defeating Thoughts?

The negative thoughts or beliefs that keep us from achieving our goals or feeling good about ourselves. These thoughts can be about ourselves, other people, or the world around us, and they can be automatic or conscious. Some common examples of self-defeating thoughts include:

“I’m not good enough.”

“I’ll never be able to do that.”

“I’m a failure.”

“Nobody likes me.”

“I’m too old/young/fat/thin/etc.”

Different things trigger these thoughts, such as past experiences, current events, or self-doubt. They persist and are difficult to shake, causing feelings of hopelessness, helplessness or unworthiness.
