Depression: How to Fight It Actively (2021)

Emotions mostly originate in the limbic system and the most primitive part of the brain. On the other hand, feelings come from the frontal lobe. In other words, feelings result from abstract thinking. Emotions are innate and genetically determined as the result of evolution. Although it seems weird, there’s a maximum number of emotions we can have - there’s no maximum number of feelings we can have.We verbally define feelings, while we define emotions psychophysiologically. Feelings originate from our interpretation of events and sensations. Emotions come from a nervous system response.

Automatic vs. reason

Emotions are characterized by being quite immediate. They represent the body’s alarm and survival system. In order to have a feeling, it’s necessary to think about what has happened (value the emotion), reflect on how we behaved, and thus begin to elaborate on it psychologically.Because emotions come and go quickly, our body has another assessment and motivation mechanism: feelings. Feelings represent the remnants of emotions. One of the main differences between emotions and feelings is that a feeling develops little by little.

The speed in which they appear and change

The basic and universal emotions include joy, anger/rage, fear, surprise, and sadness. In this sense, surprise is a neutral emotion whose function is to help us stay alert and very aware of what’s going to happen.For example, sadness makes us distance ourselves from others. However, feelings are much more varied and slow. They lead us to reflect on what we can do to stop feeling uncomfortable or unpleasant.

Emotions are very powerful while feelings aren’t as intense

Finally, because there are differences between emotions and feelings, there are also different ways to manage these experiences. While emotions require disconnection (for example, to avoid increasing anger and losing control), feelings need to be heard and redirected. In any case, it’s possible to both regulate emotions and reinterpret feelings and these things help us have better psychological health.

Three Differences Between Emotions and Feelings

One of the most common misconceptions about introverts is that we're shy and don't like people, says <a href="https://www.fieldtriphealth.com/">Field Trip Health </a>psychotherapist Mike Dow, PsyD. "Introversion may look like shyness to an extrovert—but it's really more about the energy depletion and the way they experience the world," he explains. We just need a lot of alone time to recharge after being social, whereas an extrovert thrives on the energy of other people. This could lead to an "introvert hangover,” exhausted from the effort of being around others.

"When introversion was first identified by Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist famous for analytical psychology, the focus was on all the mental energy that introverts use up when socializing," Dr. Dow says. "I've also seen my own introverted patients experience a depletion of physical energy when socializing too much. This is why introverts need alone time. That combination of both mental and physical energy depletion is what I would identify as the 'introvert hangover' despite the fact it's not a recognized diagnosis."

Basis of the theory

In addition to being drained physically and mentally, you can also be drained spiritually, Dr. Dow says. "I tell my patients that 'feelings are information.' Thus, this introvert hangover is information that you overdid the socializing and haven't spent enough time alone in your own thoughts/within your own psyche—where introverts thrive," he says.

Physical and Mental Effects

An introvert hangover can leave you too exhausted to deal with people IRL, and can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days or more. If you experience the latter, Dr. Dow says you really know you overdid it and seriously need to prioritize some alone time. An introvert hangover can even make responding to texts feel like an insurmountable task. "If you don't have the energy to text back, you know that you have really depleted your inner battery of physical/mental energy," says Dr. Dow. "Ask yourself: What did I learn from this experience? How can I manage my energy better next time?"

Ways to deal with an introvert hangover

The good news is that introvert hangovers can be helped, and even prevented, with the right recharge methods. First up: taking some alone time. Dr. Dow suggests meditation, a session of <a href="https://www.wellandgood.com/psychedelics-medical-conditions/">psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy </a> (which is what they specialize in at Field Trip Health), <a href="https://www.wellandgood.com/gardening-as-meditation/">gardening </a>, or time reading as means of doing so.

It can also be helpful to set up systems to explain to friends and family why you are going to be MIA for a bit. "Don't feel guilty about this time within your own inner world,” says Dr. Dow. “This is where introverts thrive. Let your closest family and friends know that you've upping your self-care game and, thus, are going to go into brick mode on your phone and set your away message on email when you're going into introvert recharge mode. This will save you from having to send individual texts."

Dr. Dow also says to own your self-worth, and be honest with people. "When you're in a good space, tell them something like: 'I'm being more conscious with the way I pay attention to what I need and my energy. If you ever get a brick mode text back or my flower emoji, you'll know I'm recharging.'" He adds that you can prevent abandonment and hurt feelings by making clear the time limit. "So if your mom keeps on texting, say, 'Hey mom, I'm in recharge mode. I'll text you back tomorrow,' instead of 'I can't talk right now,'" he says.

Recharge your social battery

"The former is positive and specific; the latter is negative and vague. Positive and specific communication makes relationships better—whether they're personal or work." He adds that the person who needs a time out is the one who should come back. (Meaning: You DO have to text your mom back after the recharge time you set up.)

But there is no need to rush to recharge. "Use the methods above until you notice your energy returning," Dr. Dow says. As you start to incorporate them and become more aware of how much time with others is too much, Dr. Dow says you can begin to make adjustments to prevent an introvert hangover from happening in the first place.

Fitting with the surrounding is needed when it comes to appearing mature. Nervousness, hesitation, uncertainty, etc are all signs of lacking maturity. Mature people know what they are doing and they have experienced enough to stay hopeful in any situation. Hence, confidence is essential to appear as a mature person.

We Don't Stay Confident

We often make fast gestures and talk so fast that it appears to the other person as we are less mature.Moreover, fast gestures and speech are signs of nervousness, discomfort, unstable emotions, lacking self-control, etc. So, it is best to slow down and communicate at a normal pace.

Sometimes, we change the subject matter of the conversation unconsciously. What happens is that the person feels that we aren't paying much attention and that our mind/ thoughts are not stable. Therefore, it's best to stay within the topic.

Staying off Topic

Same as the other ideas, displaying a lack of self-control is another factor. Complaining about something because it didn't go in our way, feeling empty at hard times, aggressive behaviors are all features of low self-control and also low emotional intelligence. In this case, controlling emotions is necessary, or less outward emotional expressions can be assisting.

Interestingly, our getup also matters. In fact, in experiments, younger people tend to choose light colors and older choose darker. Flashy clothes also indicate childness. Even our hairstyle makes us look irresponsible. It's human psychology to judge someone based on their getup. So in this regard, one can wear something a little bit formal (not too much formal or too casual; a little above) and at least get a haircut that doesn't block their forehead like an emo kid.

Why You Don't Seem Mature to Others and What to Do

W hen did you feel so lonely last time? Have you asked Why? Did you feel so.. if no! Ask yourself why? If, Yes then Good! You are not the only one who is feeling lonely or lonely. Everyone feels that way from time to time, from breaking up to losing someone through death. And sometimes, it is also ok! To have loneliness, thoughts. It only gets worse when you have it for too long.

Our biggest problem that is making us feel lonely is the Internet and Covid 19. The Internet made us more isolated than ever and the Japanese have their own term called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFgWy2ifX5s">Hikikomori </a> . Where one decides to isolate themselves completely from the world and it is a serious issue there.

More you stay! connect with the people who we don't know virtually, more you feel lonely. We are happy and more alive when we meet someone physically than virtually we can be friends with anyone virtually. But, it lacks the real connection that we could have through face-to-face interaction.

1. Accept this, when you feel, your lonely, you will feel it :-  You won't feel until you feel so that means I won't feel lonely if I don't. You are feeling lonely because you think you are that is why? You are feeling. My dad is no more and it totally depends on me to feel good or bad.  You can still, feel lonely even when you're with someone you love the most. The main thing is I don't feel it in the first place and that is why? I never feel lonely. Because once you start the circle will continue as a never-ending process.

2. Appreciate this life you have :- We often think happiness exists outside and that is not true. Happiness is created by your thoughts, not the things you have. When you appreciate the things you have you love yourself more and once you love yourself more you feel more alive and peaceful. You may have everything you need still you will empty. So, start appreciating the things you have.

3. Loneliness and Depression are interconnected :- Loneliness and Depression are two sides of a coin. If, one starts another starts too, the point is to feel alive each and be grateful for the things we have. When we stay alone we learn more about ourselves as I say it  "Being alone is not a curse, by being alone you get a chance to know yourself better " let this loneliness feeling be your guiding light towards new you not towards self-destruction of your own life.

5.  What loneliness teach you? :-  It taught me many things in my life. I feel happier alone than with someone it makes you love yourself even more. Accepting that you can still be happy being alone is nothing wrong. Every great human that lived, was the lonely person they felt being more alone gave them the opportunity to come up with a better idea than being in a crowd.

Implicit learning refers to the process of acquiring knowledge about the structure of the environment without conscious awareness. Like how we learn to ride the bike. Explicit learning is a conscious operation where the individual makes & tests hypotheses in a search for structure. Like how we learn math.During the Palaeolithic times, knowledge was 100% implicit. There was no abstract thought, patterns were recognised intuitively and expressed in metaphors. Shamanic rituals was how knowledge was passed around. The Axial Revolution will introduce abstract thought & explicit learning.

Creativity is when different parts of your brain connect. It's what happens when we are in a state of flow, during meditation or in psychedelic experiences.Metaphors is how we do that in language. Most of our language is metaphorical. We ask "Do you see what I am saying". We say "Hope this is not hard for you" or "This is the middle of my talk". Most of what we say are metaphors.Metaphorical thought, your ability to make analogies, is a measure of a good problem solver. The smart people make interesting connections.

Transcendence means “to go beyond.” In the case of the Axial “revolution”, “going beyond” has several meanings:<ul><li>a shift to thinking about the cosmos and the way it works rather than taking for granted that it works</li><li>the rise of second-order thinking about the ways that human beings operate, realising both that we are lying to ourselves and that we can improve ourselves. </li></ul>It's why the transcendent thinkers of the Axial Age: Buddha, Plato etc ... are still relevant today.

Second order thinkers ask themselves the question “And then what?” It is a form of meta-cognition that allows for investigation of our own thinking.It became a thing during the Axial Revolution, when writing allowed us to store our thoughts, reflect on them and communicate with others across time and space.
